The trail follows the creek bottom for about 1.5 miles, then switchbacks up to the top of the ridge to the east. Look for a trail post marking the point where the trail leaves the creek bottom. Cow trails are abundant and well defined in this area so be alert! The trail then follows the ridge top and then goes through a mix of aspen and spruce-fir.
This continues for about 2.0 miles until the trail reaches a series of meadows on the south slope of Landslip Mountain. At the head of the meadows the trail turns west, contouring around the south and west slopes of Landslip Mountain through an old growth Spruce-fir forest. After passing through a saddle just west of Landslip, the tread becomes faint. Head up along the north side of the knob to the west, and the Burnett trail lies in the saddle just to the west.
This hike is long and steep, and water is scarce in the later part of summer once leaving Wildcat Creek. The scenery is great on the upper 1.0 mile, and the opportunity to see elk and deer is excellent on all of the trail, especially the upper half. The trail is primarily a foot and horseback trail, with minimal maintenance. Those using this trail should be studying topographic maps.
Directions: From Dolores, Colorado, Take Colorado State Hwy 145 north and approximately 5.0 miles west of Priest Gulch Campground, where the highway crosses the river. Park on the west side of the river, go through the gate near the roadway, and follow an old road through the meadow following Wildcat Creek. The first 0.5 mile is in private land, so please act respectfully. A trail sign is posted at the Forest Boundary.
