This trail can be a moderate, scenic day hike or an overnighter when combined with other trails. Fishing opportunities are available.

Deer Creek provides some excellent views of the West Needle Mountains along with moderate hiking and good access to other trails. This trail is a great day hike, but can be combined with other trails such as Coal Creek and Engineer Mountain Trails for an overnighter. The trail ascends through some aspens, then switchbacks up a gully right above a small limestone cliff band. The trail continues through some nice meadows parallel to Deer Creek, then it more or less disappears. The other option is to keep going straight up the valley/bowl to Engineer Mountain Trail.

Directions: From Durango, Colorado, Approximately 38 miles north of Durango on U.S. Highway 550, drive into the hairpin turn and over Deer Creek. Continue another 1/8 of a mile or so to the dirt pull-off on the south side of the road. The trailhead begins on the north side of the road.

Elevation: 9,800 feet

Ending Elevation: 10,900 feet

Elevation Gain: 1,100 feet
