The Swampy Pass Trail, 439, leads west from Ohio Creek Road into the West Elk Wilderness. The eastern terminus of the trail begins at Pass Creek Trailhead approximately 18 miles north of Highway 135 at 8,980 feet. The trail lies immediately south of the West Elk Wilderness boundary, therefore it is not open to motorized vehicles, although you may see some mountain bikers on the tread.
Upon leaving the trailhead the path begins to ascend steadily. Three miles from the trailhead the trail passes a small unnamed lake that lies at 9,670 feet. The trail continues to ascend two more miles to Swampy Pass, elevation 10,409 feet. Less than a mile passed the pass, trail 439 ends at Lowline Trail, 438. Total mileage for Swampy Pass Trail is five and a half miles.
Directions: From Ohio Creek Road, Travel north on Ohio Creek Road from Gunnison, approximately 18 miles. The trailhead is located one half mile north of the National Forest boundary on the western side of the road.
