Samtökin 78 was formed over 30 years ago when gay liberation was just beginning to take hold in Iceland and before anti-discrimination laws were passed. As such, it's a venerable queer landmark which has played an important part in most gay Icelanders lives for a long time. Visitors will find lots going on at the center that they can participate in whether they speak Icelandic or not. On Monday and Thursday nights, the National Organization of Lesbians and Gays in Iceland hosts an Open House. Films are screened, people meet, and information is exchanged. The center has been hooking gay people up since its inception in 1978 and as the bar scene here is mostly mixed, the center is a good place to go specifically to meet gay Icelanders in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. Near this center on Ingólfsstræti 3, you'll also find the fun and friendly gay Q Bar, which tends to fill up with members after Open House nights.
