One of Italy's most exquisite small museums, the Borghese occupies what was once the 17th-century villa of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, a patron of Bernini and collector of Caravaggio. The rich but manageable collection encompasses classical antiquities, plus Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, including paintings ranging from Titian's Sacred and Profane Love to Raphael's Deposition. But it's Bernini who rivets our eyes, as usual in Rome, stealing the show with a series of exquisite sculptures, starting with his fierce David. The Borghese doesn't take long to explore, and the limited admission policy allows for a more intimate, relaxed experience than many other museums.
