Located about 45 minutes away by boat, Laughing Bird Caye National Park is well inside the barrier reef and one of the nearest dive spots to the Placencia region, making it a popular area for diving or snorkeling day trips. The caye comprises a collection of small pinnacles, sewn together by fringing reefs, to create a unique, arc-shaped limestone formation known as a "faro." Divers can make a first dive on the steeply sloping backside of the faro, where eagle rays and sea turtles cruise along near-vertical reefs that start at the surface and bottom out at about 100 feet. Inside Laughing Bird Caye's protective arms, shallow, gently sloping sand flats are good places to see stingrays, while intermittent patch reefs boast healthy populations of juvenile reef fish, lobsters, and the occasional reef shark.
