Located on a hillside high above the city, La Luz's glass-walled dining room is one of the most elegant eateries in town. And they mean it, with a dress code calling for no shoes or shorts after 6:00 P.M. and recommending a coat for dinner. Located in the Alta Hotel, the much-lauded La Luz serves up some of the more adventurous food in Costa Rica, mixing fresh local ingredients with Continental and California influences. Eat in the tropical hardwood dining room, or gaze out at the city's lights on the outdoor patio or in the garden under the 100-year-old Guanacaste tree. The fiery garlic prawns are sautéed in ancho-chile oil and sage and served over a roasted-garlic potato mash. Sunday brunch is popular and a chance for you to gorge on lemon pancakes with fruit compote or sea bass stuffed with eggplant and goat cheese. The wait staff is some of the most attentive and knowledgeable in Costa Rica.
