One of the most famous sites in all the world, Corcovado is famous for its statue of Christ the Redeemer, overlooking the city of Rio spread before it. The view is unparalled and breathtaking. Corcovado literally means hunchback in Portuguese, a name given due to its unusual shape. There is a steep train going up the mountain with fantastic views of the remaining jungle canopy on the side of the mountain, giving a sense of what the Indians and the early Portuguese settlers had viewed at the time of the city's founding. The statue was opened in 1931, and stands 98 feet high and 2,329 feet above sea level.
