A huge colony of flamingos nests and breeds in a national wetland reserve near the coastal town of Celestun, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Merida. Boat tours (two to three hours) include observing the flamingos and other birds, plus visiting a petrified forest and swimming in a freshwater spring.
