  • Take a break with a light meal at one of the dozens of small cafés lining Hang Khay Street. In summer, a stop at Fanny—a French-style ice creamery—is a must. Fanny's seasonal-fruit-, ginger-, and cinnamon-flavored ice creams are legendary.
  • Hoan Kiem is named after a magical sword that Emperor Ly Thai To used to repel the Chinese from Vietnam. While the emperor was boating on the lake later, a giant golden tortoise rose from the water and seized the sword, disappearing into the water. The sword was never seen again, but the legend is kept alive by Hanoians who glimpse the rare tortoises from time to time—a good luck omen.
