El Malecon, officially called the Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, is the waterfront strip in San Miguel. It runs for nearly a mile along the ocean. The sea side of the street is a popular place for strolling, while the other side of the street is lined with diamond merchants, jewelers, souvenir shops, and popular nightspots including the Hard Rock Cafe.

  • This is the place to browse and bargain for souvenirs.
  • The sea side, with its sculptures, is a good place to walk. On the other side of the street, browse the shops selling pottery, paper mache fruit, wood carvings, brightly colored hammocks and lots of silver.
