Discovered in the 18th century by local fishermen, this impressive cave system has been a tourist attraction for decades. Extending almost two-and-a-half miles, only a portion of the limestone caverns is open to the public via a narrow staircase cut directly into the wall of a sea cliff. Once inside, 45-minute tours in English and Italian take visitors to saltwater lakes, stalactites, stalagmites, and alcoves created over millions of years. During summer peak season, up to 200 people can be in the caves at any one time (flash photography and touching of rocks is prohibited). When the sea is calm, summer boat tours of the cathedral-like grotto are also available. There are easy-to-find and cheap buses to the caves from Alghero.
