Discovered by local fishermen in the 18th century, this is one of the greatest natural attractions on Sardinia (and keep in mind the island is loaded with caves). The spectacular cavern is dripping with rock formations and is home to a saltwater lake. The cave is said to extend over two miles, but only a small part of it is open to visitors. It's such a dramatic setting, it has even appeared in movies. The narrow walkway cuts into the edge of the 300-foot Capo Caccia cliffs, just above the crashing waves, and is not for the faint of heart. It's now such a popular tourist attraction that literally hundreds of people cram single-file into it during the high summer season. Tours of the cave are given in Italian and English, and it's reachable by either bus or boat from Alghero town. Two other caverns lie nearby: the "Green Grotto," which isn't open for tourists, and the "Grotta di Ricami," which is only accessible from the sea.
