• There are ferries and hydrofoils that sail regularly from Sorrento to Capri, and that, indeed, is how many daytrippers arrive at the island, just as they do from Naples. The fabled "Blue Island" is extremely popular, with tourists crowding the two towns and sites by day. Tourist trap? Yes, but for a visit that reveals the quieter beauty of the island, stay over at one of Capri's hotels.
• The best sites to see: Villa Jovis, most important of the 12 villas built during the reign of Emperor Tiberius; the famed Blue Grotto, an exquisite cavern pool explored via rowboats left near the mouth of the cave (no swimming allowed); the chairlift up Mount Solaro, followed by a photo-op-a-minute walk down; Arco Naturale, stunning remainder of a limestone cave; and any island tours by boat.
