• Herculaneum, named for Hercules, was a smaller residential city than bustling commercial neighboring city, Pompeii. It takes less time to tour, making it better for younger children than expansive Pompeii. It's also somewhat less crowded.
• Because of the way ash and superheated gasses from Vesuvius overcame the city, Herculaneum is far better preserved than Pompeii--even organic materials, including wood, can still be seen here, immersing visitors in a truer sense of life in 79 AD than is possible at Pompeii. Get a free booklet and map to the site at the ticket office. Audio guides are also available.
• Do not drive to Herculaneum or Pompeii. Both are easily reached via the Circumvesuviana railway from Naples, which is both economical and fast. It's also far more pleasant than dealing with the crushing summer traffic and parking problems encountered if driving.
