Koh Samui is a major jumping-off point for boat tours to this impressive marine reserve, granted national-park status in 1980. The park is made up of 42 rain-forest islands riddled with caves, coves, lagoons, secret beaches, and towering limestone outcroppings. The wildlife is just as fascinating as the terrain, with langurs, macaques, and many colorful bird species. The isle of Koh Mae, or "Island Mother," features a hike to an unusual saltwater lake hidden inside a hill. Koh Wao and Hin Yippon in the north of the park are excellent for diving and snorkeling. The whole park covers an area of about 63 square miles of shallow ocean in the Gulf of Thailand.
