In 1996, by decree of the Mexican President, Bahia de Loreto Parque Nacional (National Marine Park of Loreto Bay) was established. The park encompasses approximately 800 square miles of sea, islands, wetlands, lagoons, mangroves, seagrass beds, and marine areas that provide critical breeding habitat and feeding grounds for many marine species. The islands within its boundaries are Coronado, Del Carmen, Danzante, Montserrate, and Santa Catalina, and among the sea life that enjoy refuge here are mother-of-pearl, starfish, sea urchins, fan coral, killer whales, blue whales, dolphins, and sea lions. Conservationists have called the Sea of Cortez a place of "striking natural beauty in a dramatic setting formed by rugged islands with high cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the brilliant reflection from the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters." Because of the extraordinary diversity and abundance of bird and marine life, investigators determined that the area "constitutes a unique eco-region of high priority for biodiversity conservation." In terms of tourism, the park ensures that Loreto's offshore environment will thrive and remain a compelling destination for water sports enthusiasts, bird lovers, and eco-minded travelers who would rather immerse themselves in Mexico's natural beauty than its teeming, glitzy resorts.
