Loreto's mission was considered the headquarters of all the missions in California. Its church, built in the 18th century, is still standing. Though rather plain, it is the town's main place of worship.

FamilyExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • The mission is more historically significant than architecturally dramatic, but it's worth a short visit for families with older children who can appreciate the building and its history.
  • You'll probably spend more time at the nearby museum (Museo de los Misiones).
  • Because the mission, still in use for church services, is central to the heritage and culture of Loreto, you should see it. But don't expect kids to be greatly enamored with it.
