FamilyExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • Maison Carrée means "square house," though it isn't truly square. It is among the best-preserved Roman temples in the world, and the only one to survive whole. It's built at the edge of an ancient Roman forum.
  • The temple is set up on a huge platform, some 12 feet off the ground. Stand at the temple and look across the museum, which seems to fit into the Roman architecture even though it's thoroughly modern.
  • Before arriving in Nimes, spend some time with the kids learning about Roman-era France, and specifically Agrippa, who built the Maison Carrée. Some knowledge of Roman architectural details and styles will also make touring more meaningful. Maison Carrée features details both Corinthian and Augustin, the latter named for the classical style of the time of Emperor Augustis.
