FamilyExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • While younger children won't understand the significance of a papal palace in France, or much of the fascinating history associated with it, they'll like the four mighty towers and the utter grandness and scope of the place--it's the biggest Gothic cathedral in Europe, roughly the size of four "regular" cathedrals. This is one of the most visited monuments in France.
  • You can see more than 20 rooms, scenes of numerous historic events (most took place when the popes fled from the chaos in Rome and set up here). Particularly fascinating is the pope's private chambers.
  • Palace of the Popes, Saint Benezet Bridge, the Ramparts, Cathedrale de Notre Dame de Doms, and the Petit Palais all together make up a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
