• This was the first--and for centuries only--bridge over the Grand Canal. It has had many forms over the years, but the present bridge was constructed in the late 1500s.
• This is among Italy's famous bridges lined with shops. The first shops appeared in the 1400s and presumably had more utilitarian value than most of the crowded, overpriced, touristy shops here today. Go ahead and look in the boutiques, but this isn't your best bet for shopping unless you have bottomless pockets.
• Near the bridge is Mercato Rialto, the city's huge open-air market that includes produce, souvenirs, and the fabulous fresh fish market--all of it a glorious feast for the senses with photo ops and people-watching galore. When you get tired, pop into one of the many family-friendly restaurants near the bridge.
