FamilyExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
- Saint Mark's Bell Tower, built originally in the 9th century, is the highest structure in the city—more than 300 feet above the piazza. The view of the top of Saint Mark's Basilica, the square, and the lagoon is phenomenal. The tower has been re-built countless times over the centuries, including after a total collapse in 1902.
- While many viewpoints in Italy require walking up miles of stairs, there's an elevator to the top of the Bell Tower so even young children can see the square the same way all those pigeons do (yes, kids will understand that's a good thing).
