- This is one of the very few tourist sites in Florence that doesn't charge admission. Ponte Vecchio means old bridge, and it certainly is that. Built in 1345, it was one of the only bridges to escape being bombed in World War II.
- Originally there were all kinds of shops on the bridge, but in the 17th century only jewelers and goldsmiths were allowed to sell here. Today there are some 43 shops, most of them glittery with gold trinkets. This is the perfect place to bring your pre-teen or teenage daughter for that piece of jewelry that will forever remind her of the excellent family vacation in Florence.
- For the best photos of Ponte Vecchio--and you must have some--shoot from one of the nearby bridges, preferably early in the morning or at sunset.
