• Napoleon opened the Louvre and it remains one of the most famous museums in the world. Its historic building was given a new look when architect I.M. Pei designed the eye-catching glass pyramid that is now integral to the museum--see it from above and below ground.
• The Mona Lisa is one of the Louvre's most celebrated pieces, but frankly, it's a disappointment and will be especially so to children as it's displayed far behind ropes and glass--hardly inspirational. However, Venus de Milo is every bit as captivating as one imagines, set impressively at the end of a long hallway.
• Among the Louvre's other highlights likely to appeal to kids: The Egyptian collection with its mummified animals and huge sarcophagi and the Oriental Antiquities gallery. Don't forget that the shopping halls beneath the museum have plenty of family-oriented, along with some very high-end, stores.
