This is one of the most important historical sites in Fiji: Ancient burial grounds and pieces of pottery dating back 2,000 years have been found among these dunes, which stretch for several miles along Viti Levu's southern coast. Located directly west of the mouth of the Sigatoka River, the extensive area of roughly 1,600 acres is partly a natural beach forest, backed by a U-shaped collection of dunes towering from sixty to ninety feet tall. It was declared Fiji's first national park in 1989 and was proposed as a U.N. World Heritage Site in 1999 (it has yet to be approved). There's a small visitor center with a display of photographs portraying archaeological skeletons and Lapita pottery dug up from the area, and a circular trail is designed for long and short walks.
