On the west coast of Sweden, on the border with Norway, Sweden's first marine national park is established. The marine environment here is influenced by the Atlantic and it includes habitats and species found nowhere else in Swedish waters. This area, Kosterhavet, is also a valuable recreational resource — it is one of Sweden's most visited tourist destinations — and has an important inshore fishery, mostly for prawns and Norwegian lobsters. Protecting and maintaining the natural and economic wealth of Kosterhavet is one of the great challenges in managing this new national park. The Kosterhavet National Park was inaugurated in September 2009.

  • Pay a visit to the temporary visitor center near the hamlet of Västra bryggan on Nordkoster to learn about the area's marine habitat and biodiversity. Stroll to the nearby pristine cove at Bjornsängen for a dip in the waters about which you've just learned! There's another nice beach just over the rise from Västra bryggan, called Basteviken.
  • Sea-kayaking and scuba-diving tours are available through Kosters Kajakuthyrning and Trident Divers, respectively, for the best way to experience the park and its aquatic wonders. Both operations are run by British expat Phil Davies, who lives on the islands.
Koster Marine National Park is the country's newest national park (bringing the total to 29; the first was established in 1909). Spanning the 800-foot-deep Kosterfjord, an impressive 6,000 underwater species call these waters home. Species include
