A small peak of an island rising along the edge of the bay at San Pedro, El Morro is connected to the mainland by a sandbar, which during low tide becomes the popular beach Playa Restinga. The promontory was the site of the island's fort during the Spanish colonial years, with cannons protecting the island during the wars for independence. Today, El Morro is garrisoned by snorkelers spot. From Playa Restinga, it's easy to access the islet's rocky shore, where tropical reef fish mix with larger deep-water species. Look for octopi and lobster hiding in holes along the rocks.
