Held since 1963, Algonquin's Public Wolf Howls have an 80 percent success rate. Offered Thursday nights in August, the event starts at the Outdoor Theatre with a presentation on wolves and wolf howling. Then it's off into the wilderness. The prospect of hearing wolves howl will have youngsters waiting in utter silence. Indeed, Algonquin's Public Wolf Howls have up to 2,000 people at a time standing silently by the roadside in the night. That's when a naturalist belts out a loud, sustained, high-pitched noise in an attempt to elicit a cry from the wilderness. Wolf pups usually respond first, yipping and yapping, before an adult lets loose, piercing the night with a howl that'll raise the hair on the back of your neck. Kids love to imitate wolves back at the campground.
