Not nearly as crowded as the Monteverde Biological Cloud Forest Reserve, neighboring Sendero Tranquillo is a private 210-acre property owned by the Lowther family, who also happen to be proprietors of nearby El Sapo Dorado, one of Costa Rica’s first eco-lodges. Sticking to the tenets of sustainable tourism, they only allow a maximum of 20 people to enter their spectacular landscape each day, as not to be overrun by tourists. They also provide an impassioned naturalist named Mauricio Ramirez who has the uncanny knack of setting up his telescope on a tripod almost instantaneously if he hears or sees a bird.
