Dating back to 1976, this is one of the six national parks in Senegal, and some say the best. Just south of La Petite Cote, the 187,000-acre park (part of a 445,000-acre biosphere reserve) is mostly made up of the delta where the Saloum and Siné rivers flow into the Atlantic Ocean. This wild region is environmentally diverse with mangrove swamps, dunes, lagoons, palm groves, salt marshes, small islands, and channels, and the area is also Senegal's main peanut-growing basin (an important export). The coastline here is lined with near perfect, empty, white-sand beaches, backed by dense vegetation hiding small fishing villages. The most popular mode of transport in this beautiful region is the pirogue (traditional African boat), which can take visitors to a number of nearby islands. The area also provides a sanctuary for a number of migratory birds including terns, flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, and sandpipers. Wild warthogs, red colobus monkeys, and hyenas give the park the feeling of a mini-safari as well.
