One of the most impressive ruins on ruin-rich Rhodes, this ancient settlement is of special interest to beach lovers because of its proximity to a long stretch of sand (wear a swimsuit under your clothes). Easily accessible by public bus, Kamiros was an extensive site built on three levels, with an acropolis atop its hill, a reservoir, and rows of Doric columns fronting homes and shops. The city was founded by the Dorians and dates back to at least as early as the eighth century B.C. Two earthquakes nearly destroyed the city—once in 226 B.C. and once in 142 B.C. The fascinating site is well enough preserved for visitors to visualize what life in this ancient city was like more than 2,000 years ago.
