Nearly every restaurant in Santorini makes good use of the cliffside views, but Ampelos' tops them all with a rooftop setting overlooking an old whitewashed Orthodox church near the south end of the town of Fira. The vast, open-air, lounge-like terrace has great panoramas in every direction, and is lined with bougainvillea, geraniums, and hibiscus flowers. The restaurant serves all local olive oils, cheeses, and wines with a Mediterranean-California fusion. The terrace is a popular spot for watching sunsets, so be sure to get there early. If you can't get in, try the more subdued but excellent Ouzepi restaurant just downstairs.
