Hikers may find the park closed in the off-season in which case they may park and walk around the gate to reach the trail which is only .25 mile down the park road.

South Mountain Loop Trail is one of Pawtuckaway's most popular trails. Many people choose to hike as far as the fire tower then retrace their steps. There is actually an entire network of trails at this park, many of which are remote and quite enjoyable even during the height of the summer season. From South Mountain, you'll be rewarded with views from the fire tower of Uncanoonuc Mountains and several surrounding ponds. You may choose to head north and hike South Ridge Trail or head northwest to reach Tower Road. From Tower Road, it is a short hike up Middle Mountain which offers scenic vistas from 800 feet.
