The trails at South Higgins Lake State Park venture through woodland then loop around to the shoreline of Marl Lake. From the Marl Lake parking lot, three trails are possible depending on the length you desire. The first loop is 2 miles, the second cross through makes a 3.5 mile loop, while hiking to the end of Marl Lake and returning to the parking lot gives you over 5 miles of pathway for hiking, mountain biking or cross-country skiing. Eighty percent of the terrain is flat and 20% is rated moderate. Cross-country ski rentals are available at nearby outfitters.
Directions: From Roscommon, MI, Take US 27 to the Higgins Lake Road exit. Follow it approximately 6.5 miles to the entrance. Park in the lot adjacent to Marl Lake.
