The Big Carp River Trail follows the cliff-line west bound for Shining Cloud Falls and the mouth of the Big Carp some 9 miles away. Little Carp River is another 11 miles.

The Little Carp Trail begins along the Lake Superior Trail, about 6 miles east of Presque Isle River. The northern stretch of this 11-mile route has an undulated contour gaining approximately 1,000 feet elevation. After several aided stream-crossings the trail reaches two waterfalls, Explorer Falls and Trapper Falls before heading north to Mirror Lake. Several trail junctions are encountered: Cross Trail (access to Greenstone Falls Cabin), Little Carp River Road, Lily Pond Trailhead, Beaver Creek Trail, South Mirror Lake and Correction Line Trail. The most difficult part of the trail is a segment rising nearly 1,600 feet, just prior to Lily Pond Trailhead.

The Big Carp River Trail runs in an east west direction from the unique and popular natural feature known as Lake of the Clouds to the mouth of the trail's namesake. The 9-mile earthen path begins with panoramic views atop the rugged 1,300-foot escarpment, and then dips in to and out of the Big Carp River Valley several times. Features of the trail include the junction with Correction Line Trail and views of ShiningCloud Falls, the park's highest waterfall. The terminus of Big Carp River Trail is at Lake Superior Trail and shore.

With the park hosting 22 trails containing over 90 miles of path, trail junctions provide access to connecting trails that lead back to your starting point. Remember that Porcupine Wilderness State Park is remote territory that demands a park map, compass, water and appropriate supplies and attire. Bug repellent is recommended during the warmer months.

Directions: From Silver City, MI, Little Carp River Trail: Head west along M-107 about 6 - 8 miles to trailhead parking located on the north side of M-107 (about 1 mile east of parking lot for Lake of the Clouds Overlook). Begin hiking east along Lake Superior Trail. Little Carp River Trailhead is located approximately 6 miles "in" from Presque Isle River.
