Named for the baseball legend Joe Keener, this 1.5-mile trail offers an alternative form of recreation from the high-use water sports found at Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. The trail begins on the west side of Route A1A at the north side of the first parking lot. It takes you through an open habitat of scrub oak with an understory of saw palmettos and prickly pear. Tall palms are sprinkled about but not enough to supply any significant shade. Even though the trail is only 1.5 miles in length, be sure to wear sunscreen and take along drinking water. You will find some relief from the sun at the base of several red cedars. Resting benches offer opportunities to relax and possibly observe birdlife.
The picnic area, seawall and boat launch are located on this side of A1A as well. The other side of the park houses the campground and a large parking lot for day users.
Directions: From Daytona Beach, FL, Travel north along A1A about 17 miles. Turn left (west) and park in the first parking lot.
