This is an easy 1.5-mile trail that starts at Wailaki or Nadelos Recreation Area and climbs 800 feet. Coastline and mountain vistas are spectacular at the ridgetop. Downhill, the trail descends sharply through old-growth Douglas fir trees and ends a quarter mile from the beach.

  • Chemise Mountain Trail is one of the easier trails in the King Range; so easy, in fact, that it has become popular with mountain bikers as well as hikers. Trail access is from the Hidden Valley Trailhead located near Wailaki or Nadelos Campgrounds, and the hike to Chemise Mountain's summit is 1.5 miles one-way with an 800-foot elevation gain. Much of the trail travels through Douglas fir forest.
  • Views of the Pacific coast and inland Yolla Bolly Mountains are spectacular along much of the route, but the big eye-candy payoff comes when you reach the 2,598-foot summit of Chemise Mountain. And don't be surprised if you share the path with some rather large, furry companions. Roosevelt elk graze in the meadows and valleys along this trail.
