The ancient city of Ephesus (Efes) needs little introduction as one of the best preserved examples of Roman life in the world today. The City is thought to have been inhabited since around 3,000 B.C. and evidence of Roman, Byzantine, Seljukian, and Ottoman civilizations are still seen today. Ephesus was known for the cult of Cybele, the Anatolian Fertility Goddess, and then later for Artemis, the Virgin Goddess for whom a temple was built. The Temple of Artemis is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
