If you're not a diver, you'll probably want to sign up for scuba classes after exploring this fascinating museum. It's housed within the stone walls of St. Peter's Castle, an icon of Bodrum located on a small peninsula jutting out into the sea. The castle, in various forms, has been in Roman, Crusader, and Ottoman hands, and the structure is worth a visit in itself. But the exhibits are the real draw. Overseen by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (an American nonprofit organization), various ancient shipwrecks have been reassembled for display and occupy several buildings in the castle. Included are Bronze Age and Roman ships and the famous Uluburun shipwreck, dating from the 14th century B.C. and believed to be the oldest shipwreck in the world. The Uluburun shipwreck's treasures—including ivory, gems, and gold jewelry—are also on display. The museum has exhibits of ancient glass, tombs, and a dungeon downstairs, if you dare.
