A freshwater island with the highest altitude in the world, Ometepe was created from twin volcanoes—Maderas and Concepcion—two towering centerpieces that are connected by an isthmus to form an hourglass-shaped island. According to historians, in Pre-Columbian times indigenous tribes from the north traveled to Ometepe Island to find a paradise envisioned by prophets. The island's numerous petroglyphs, ceramics and statues are a testament to the number of tribes and cultures that once existed here.
