• Virgin Gorda is perhaps the most popular day trip from Tortola, and swarms of cruise ship passengers fill the morning ferries, most of them headed for The Baths. Ideally, come to this popular site early or late in the day. If crowds overwhelm, follow the path north to beautiful Spring Bay, which is almost as pretty but far less visited.

The geological scenery is at its most evocative around The Baths, where the rounded granite rocks meet the sea along a sandy shoreline, yielding a maze of grottoes edged by brilliant snorkeling water. Follow the trail and ladders through the main jumble, or swim along its edge—you'll wind up at Devil's Bay, a heavenly curl of sand.
