And what a museum it is! Opened in 2002, her favorite residence houses her collection of more than 3,500 works of art from the Muslim world (many embedded in the house itself) acquired over the course of 60 years. The cliffside setting in front of a famed surf spot is reason enough to visit, but the sheer quality and quantity of the art, from sculptures to fountains to tile work all expertly displayed inside and outside her expansive mansion exactly the way she left it, is nothing short of astounding. Shangri La is only open to small group tours, and you'd better make reservations months in advance due to the tour's popularity.
