This out, native Nebraskan has been a mainstay of the Honolulu arts scene for more than two decades. Douglas had been plotting to come to Hawaii since he was eight years old and finally did so at age 19. In the early '80s, after publishing best-selling books such as Pidgin to da Max, Douglas committed himself to drawing and painting the male body in a variety of forms. "I had always been an artist, but when I finally gave myself permission to paint naked men, I realized I had something to say...I think Oahu has the most beautiful men in the world, even better than Brazil!" Internationally known for his stunning male nudes in a huge variety of artistic styles (mainly of strapping local young Asian and Pacific Islander men in natural island settings), Simonson's works are priced anywhere from $25 to $25,000 and include posters and calendars and one-of-a-kind prints. The friendly Douglas is happy to arrange private showings at his Date Street studio in Waikiki by prior arrangement.
