  • Climb to the 760-foot summit of the crater—you'll be glad you made the effort.
  • Bring water. There's a 225-foot tunnel to walk through, as well as two stairways—one with 99 steps, one with 76.
  • Plan on one and a half hours for the trip. The trail to the rim is about 0.7 miles one way.
The hands-down best time to hike up to Diamond Head State Monument is sunrise. In the middle of the day, crowds thicken and temps rise. There's no shade along the trail and no facilities at the top, but restrooms are located at the trailhead.
