• We forget in this country that we have had kings and queens, but here's the proof. This is the only official state residence of royalty in the United States, the one-time home of both King Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's last two monarchs.
• The palace is a cultural treasure celebrating an important aspect of Hawaiian culture and history. It has two sections: state apartments and private quarters, and Palace Galleries, as well as the grounds. Areas open to the public: state dining room, Grand Hall, throne room, and the imprisonment room where the queen was held when the monarchy was overthrown.
• Visitors have three options for touring Iolani Palace. A self-guided Gallery Tour provides access only to the galleries and grounds (check out the Coronation Pavilion on the grounds). The Grand Tour is docent-led and the Audio Tour is self-guided; both include the state rooms and private quarters as well as exhibit galleries. No children under age five on the Grand or Audio tours.
