This FWS-administered refuge is located on the north end of Hatteras Island, ten miles south of Nags Head on NC 12. It is an important sanctuary for some 265 species of birds as they migrate along the Atlantic "flyway." Species include terns, swans, herons, egrets, and brown pelicans.
