Located on the northernmost section of Kaanapali Beach, Black Rock is excellent for swimming, and a beachwalk provides easy access to hotels, shopping, and restaurants. Get a good underwater look at this large, black-lava rock at one end of Kaanapali Beach; it's almost completely encrusted in coral with a variety of fish and sea turtles swimming at its base. Legend says the spirits of Hawaiian warriors left the earth by leaping from the rock; in addition to spirits, be aware of the occasional strong current.

BeachExpert Tips & Helpful Hints
  • Ka'anapali Beach is divided by the large black lava rock that earned this beach its name. Snorkeling here is unmatched—the rock is encrusted in coral and schools of fish circle the formation.
  • Currents often pick up around the rock. If you're swimming, mind the water at the point.
  • Lifeguards watch out for swimmers, but that's about the only luxury available at Black Rock. There are no public restrooms or facilities.
