Iao Valley State Park preserves unique cultural and interesting volcanic formations and natural resources. The park is relatively small, six acres, but lots of history and lore surround the area.

The unique rock formation, Iao Needle, is the most obvious feature of the park. It stands 1,200 feet above the valley floor. A botanical garden created by plants brought to the island by Hawaiians who lived in the valley is accessible by a short path. Also on this site was the Battle of Kepaniwai, where Kamehameha I's forces conquered Maui's army in an effort to unite the islands in 1790. This state park is designated a National Natural Landmark. The state maintains lavatories, a walking path and scenic overlooks at the site.

Visitors to Iao Valley State Park will enjoy the beauty of the natural scenery as well as the interesting cultural history of the site. Hiking and plant identification, as well as photography occupy visitors to this state park.

Location
This park is located in the highlands of the West Maui Forest Reserve. It can be accessed by driving to the end of Iao Valley Road (Highway 32).

Climate
This site lies at an elevation of 2,250 feet, which makes temperatures somewhat cooler than coastal areas. Be sure to bring a light jacket when traveling in the highlands.
