Wharton's network of some 30 miles of sand-packed trail and singletrack is courtesy of an all-volunteer effort spearheaded by the Jersey Action Riders and managed through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Division of Parks and Forestry. All the loops originate from either the back of the Batsto Village parking lot or by the Atsion Ranger Station, including a gentle half-mile loop for newbies and a fun five-mile loop along firm singletrack and old wagon roads.

Editor Tips & Helpful Hints
  • The five-mile Batsto Watchtower Trail is the pick of the trails, with a combination of hard singletrack and some easier stuff along old wagon roads.
  • Given the sandy conditions on the trails in the Atsion area, it's recommended that you ride these in winter when the ground is usually harder underfoot.
  • Visit the Jersey Action Riders' website (www.jerseyactionriders.org) for trail info, maps, and directions, and to hook up with local trail-building crews.
