The black sands of Honokalani Beach, at Wai'anapanapa State Park, are a must-see on the famous road to Hana. While the water here is a lovely electric blue, it's not ideal for swimming—strong waves and currents roil among offshore lava rocks.

The black sands of Honokalani Beach, at Wai'anapanapa State Park, are a must-see on the famous road to Hana. While the water here is a lovely electric blue, it's not ideal for swimming—strong waves and currents roil among offshore lava rocks. However, the scenery is incredible, with jet-black sand lining a cove carved from the lava rock, and vibrant green rainforest spilling from the hillside. Hiking trails follow the ancient "King's Highway," which once ringed the island, and the park features rock archways, blow holes, sea caves, and lava tubes, as well as an ancient Hawaiian temple site and a lighthouse.
